Asteroseismology of Cepheids

چکیده

The importance of Cepheids is well known in many fields of astronomy. In this contribution I would like to show how it is possible to obtain indications about the internal structure of a Cepheid and how we can test models of this class of variable stars. Section 2 introduces the Fourier decomposition, a tool to describe quantitatively the light curves of pulsating stars. In the past years I have been involved in a project concerning Cepheids with P < 8 d and in Sect. 3 I will show how an observational result was progressively built on the basis of old and new data; the latter were collected on selected targets just to clarify some controversial points. Since different pulsation modes were suspected among these stars, an independent confirmation was searched for. To do that we applied the least–squares technique to Double Mode Cepheids. By obtaining a very satisfactory description of their pulsational content (Sect. 4), we demonstrated how powerful the method is. Moreover, we could confirm that between Cepheids with P < 8 d they are both fundamental and first overtone pulsators (Sect. 5). The detection of small amplitude cross–coupling terms and higher harmonics in the light curves of Double Mode Cepheids allowed us to quantify the properties of the high– order terms and hence to discover other peculiarities (Sect. 6), very useful to complete the scenario of the resonance effects and to test some theoretical models (Sect. 7).

Pulsating Relativistic Stars

Pulsating stars have given important information in classical astronomy and are still an active research field, e.g. asteroseismology or helioseismology. By studying the rich oscillation stellar spectra, optical astronomy makes predictions for the stellar equations of state (EOS), the evolutionary age of the stars, and in the case of Cepheids one can make exact predictions for the distance of t...

On the Enhancement of Mass Loss in Cepheids Due to Radial Pulsation. Ii. the Effect of Metallicity

It has been observed that Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds have lower masses for the same luminosity than those in the Milky Way. The model, from Neilson & Lester (2008), of pulsation– driven mass loss for Cepheids is applied to theoretical models of Cepheids with metallicity consistent with the Milky Way and Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The mass–loss model is analyzed using the metallic...

Using Ultra Long Period Cepheids to Extend the Cosmic Distance Ladder to 100 Mpc and Beyond

We examine the properties of 18 long period (80 − 210 days) and very luminous (median absolute magnitude of MI = −7.86 and MV = −6.97) Cepheids to see if they can serve as an useful distance indicator. We find that these Ultra Long Period (ULP) Cepheids have a relatively shallow Period-Luminosity (PL) relation, so in fact they are more “standard candle”-like than classical Cepheids. In the redd...

Ultra-low Amplitude Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud

The MACHO variables of LMC Field 77 that lie in the vicinity of the Cepheid instability strip are reexamined. Among the 144 variables that we identify as Cepheids we find 14 that have Fourier amplitudes < 0.05 mag in the MACHO red band, of which 7 have an amplitude < 0.006mag : we dub the latter group of stars ultra-low amplitude (ULA) Cepheids. The variability of these objects is verified by a...

Milky Way Rotation from Cepheids

The 87 new 0 determinations were added to the existing sample of cepheids with known radial velocities, forming an extended sample of 278 galactic classical cepheids with reliable radial velocity and photometry. We then calculated distances for these objects through a Period-Luminosity-Colour relation due to Feast & Walker (1987). The position of the cepheids in the galactic disk as given by th...
